Sigg's reputation as an eco-friendly company is on the line after the company's CEO recently revealed that the Swiss company's aluminum water bottles contained BPA until an August 2008 change in their manufacturing process.
A full year after the switch to BPA-free bottle liners, Sigg's CEO, Steve Wasik, issued a statement on the company's website regarding the controversy, assuring customers that there is no evidence of BPA leaching from the old liners and reiterating the company's commitment to eco-friendly practices and products. In an effort to maintain customer loyalty, Sigg will replace bottles manufactured prior to August 2008* with new bottles that have BPA- and phthalate-free "EcoCare" liners. For more information about receving a replacement bottle, contact Sigg via email at: liners@mysigg.com
I know many moms who are outraged by what they believe to be deceptive practices on the part of a company that touts its commitment to green living yet allegedly witholds information from its customers. Before Wasik came clean, many green bloggers and concerned consumers who tried to get information from Sigg regarding their products' composition, specifically regarding BPA content, reportedly hit a brick wall-now we know why. I don't own any Sigg bottles, but won't be buying one anytime soon-I've read that the new liners tend to chip, so I'm generally unimpressed with the company. I'll stick with my thinksport and will find something safe for my little one when the time comes.
